In Nicholas Kristof"s "Land of Limitations" article he uses diction in certain words are prases that he says to appeal to peoples emotions. He relates to these emotins by saying "We've become the the socially ridig society our forebears fled" (Kristof 13-15). He appeals to emotions by showing how our ancestors came here to escape poverty, but now even the United States is struggling with their poverty levels. Kristof does an excellent job using tone throughout his article. He talks about one of his old ffriends Rick. Rick was a nice guy who had a difficult childhood and essentially rasied himself due to the lack of his parents. Another important detail about Rick was he had a pretty crucial heart disease which required him to take a rather expensive type of medicine. Now at this point in time Rick had been divorced twice and one day his ex-wife's car had gotten towed, so she called him up and he gave her $600 to pay for it. After Kristof explain all this he adds "and yes, that was for his ex-wife" (73). Even though Kristof is not giving a speech on this topic it is easy to comprehend his tone of voice from this one line and throught his whole article.
